Travel Tips

Finding Great Late Holidays
By:Jon Cheney

As summer rolls on through, and we all sit in the office pining for a foreign getaway, regrets may begin to creep in that we didn’t think ahead and book something months ago. Thankfully there are plenty of holiday operators offering last minute holiday deals so you don’t have to miss out on a summer of wonderful memories. Looking for a late holiday deal can be a bit of a chore if you’re new to the game, but here are a few top tips to give you a helping hand.

Firstly, you should enter the game with some idea of where you’d like to go, but it’s probably best to be flexible. Popular destinations will be notably more expensive, so if budget is an issue, you should think outside the box and never be afraid to try somewhere new! For example the Czech Republic makes for a top eastern European destination, with relatively cheap accommodation and overall holiday expenditure. There are dozens of fantastic sights to see in Prague, including Reduta Jazz club, which is the oldest jazz club in the city, and George Bridge, a sight-seeing hotspot for any snap-happy photographers.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little further afield, how about Bali? Resort prices have dropped off quite a lot over the last few years, which means you can pick up some great late deals if you’re shopping now. On this island you’ll be overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the place, which combines sizzling beaches, breath-taking mountains, fascinating culture and a bustling city centres. The Kecak Dance in Ulu Wata is certainly worth seeing, if only to witness the intricate costumery of the performers a the chant and dance nightly from 6pm. You can also snorkel around Menjangan Island. The waters are utterly pristine, benefitting from a lack of tourist interest in the area.

You should also consider a completely DIY holiday. Package holidays tend to be advertised in blocks of 7, 10 and 14 days breaks, which means you have less flexibility in terms of getting time off work at the last minute. City breaks are great as a late holiday option, with plenty of websites offering superb combinations on flights and accommodation. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, you should also check out the situation with hostels in your chosen destination. They’re usually markedly cheaper than hotels, and despite the common misconception, single rooms are available as well as dorm rooms, if you’re willing to pay a little extra for the privacy. They often come with self-catering facilities too, which means you don’t have to eat out every meal.
