Creating Home In Another Land

All of those moving abroad experience a phase of changes. The fear of being accepted, adjusting to the new culture and many other factors encircle your mind. You make big money, buy a new car but you still feel isolated. You find new friends, hang around at the best places and yet you still don’t call it a ‘home’.

Even if you choose to live in another country you can always stay connected to your loved ones. If home is about belonging, then there are ways to create a sense of belonging. You come to a new country for good. So why step back? You have the choice to live where you wish and still make a home. Hearing a bit of reassurance from home is always a way to combat isolation.

Earlier, calling services were few and costly that kept us away from calling home. On the contrary, today with changing pace of time, the demand for international communication is growing. As the need is increasing, methods of connecting people are also going high. Thanks to the modern technology, many companies have introduced calling services which provide cheap international calling rates and have become a great medium to bridge the gap.

While you are at a new place, your mind can stay active if you involve yourself in practical work. If you have moved to a new city, take the time to get to know your new environment. Get involved in some practical activity to keep your mind working.

One of your essential attempts should be to start making friends with the folks around you. Maybe you can select a nearby café to meet up with them on weekends. If you are interesting in reading, become a member of a local library or join creative classes based on your hobby. You can attend social functions; join sports teams or religious groups associated at your work place. The local newspapers can tell you about the current events in your area.

If you are a reserved person and don’t like socializing, then attending evening classes in a subject you are interested in. Try to learn the language of the country you live in. If you wish to join a social or a charity group, don’t just be a part but also get involved and take up certain tasks. Invest more in the local community, and simply enjoy living in an atmosphere which you can call a home. All this will help you to increase your spirit and decrease the amount of time it takes to feel settled.

Feeling homesick is like missing the life you left back home, but your near and dear ones are no more than a phone call away. Perhaps you can combat loneliness with careful discussions with friends and family. But most of all you need to understand that the place where you are at the moment is your ‘home’.
