In Response To: CELTA Questions (Dylan)

Hello Dylan. I would suggest you take the course in August but, you need to do a lot more research about jobs in England. Remember that the job has to pay enough for your accommodation, tax and living expenses. There doesn't seem to be the deals you get in other countries, such as China, where accommodation and utilities are often provided. Having said that, I have not worked in England for several years and things change. But London and the South East will be expensive. There are many private language schools and TEFL training companies, so this might be worth following up.

Many graduate English teachers in the state sector for example, have also qualified in TEFL. This is to provide English to the immigrants and their families that have made England their home. Some of these teachers will also "moonlight" , even if they take only a few adult students. Some nationalities insist on women teachers only, for teaching women. There are large communities of people from Pakistan in some of the big cities and I know it is a requirement for them. Immigrants from Eastern Europe are also numerous. The most conscientious students I found were the Poles, who after working all day would never miss a class. In addition, it is a government requirement, particularly in the Further Education area (FE), that you update your skills through CPD (Continuing Professional Development). A willingness to consider this, and a mention of it on your application, would be useful. Many FE jobs are part-time.

I would conclude that England might be a tough place to find a job. But I'm sure other posters may offer some further guidance. Glad you have chosen CELTA, as it is widely recognised in the world.
