SMART Board Activities for Adjectives
By:Michael Brent

The SMART Board interactive whiteboard allows school teachers to present interactive lessons through this technology. As use of SMART Boards becomes more widespread, so too do the number and variety of lesson plans and activities available to educators. Among the many subjects that can be taught using SMART Board technology is language arts, and there are a variety of SMART Board activities available to help students learn about adjectives.

The SMART Board
The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that, when hooked up to a computer, allows the image projected on the board to be manipulated by the user by pressing lightly on the screen's touch-sensitive surface with a fingertip or pointer. Different colored digital "pens" specifically designed for SMART Boards can be used to write on the board during the activity. When completed, the entire presentation, including any notes made during the lesson, can be saved in the computer for later use as study aids.

SMART Exchange
A section of the SMART website called the SMART Exchange allows teachers to search SMART Board lesson plans, some created by SMART and others created by educators independently, and there are several relating specifically to adjectives. Among these are "Introducing Adjectives," an introductory lesson geared to students in the first and second grades. There are also adjective activities designed for students in other grades, from kindergarten to high school. One in particular, simply called "Adjectives," allows students in the third and fourth grades to compare adjectives to those used by an author, giving them the opportunity to come up with their own adjectives to describe a picture.

PBS Kids
On the children's section of the PBS website, PBS Kids, an array of interactive whiteboard games are available for use by educators in several different areas of study. These games, designed for use on a SMART Board or other interactive whiteboard, use characters and curriculum from such PBS children's shows as "Curious George" and "Arthur." All are age-appropriate and have been vetted by educators. Within the language arts section, there are some specifically geared toward adjectives, such as an activity themed to "Between the Lions" that allows children to use adjectives in their comparative and superlative forms.

Teachers Love SMART Boards
Another excellent resource for finding notebook lesson plans for a SMART Board is the website Teachers Love SMART Boards. There, educators from throughout the world share the lesson plans they've developed. One of the interactive SMART Board activities highlighted on the site is called "The Adjective Detective," developed by the Children's University of Manchester in the U.K. In "The Adjective Detective," students can engage in a variety of adjective-related activities, such as taking a quiz or playing a game. In addition, there are seperate sections devoted to learning about comparative and superlative adjectives.
