How to Write a School Technology Plan
By:Stacy Zeiger

The use of technology is an essential tool in education as its use among Americans grows and new technology is developed. To use technology effectively in school and to stay up-to-date with the latest programs and trends, it is important for schools to develop a technology plan. Each school or district should have an individualized technology plan, as no group of students is alike.

Planning Stage

Create a technology planning team to research and write the plan. This team should be composed of those working directly with the school's technology department, a community member, a teacher, an administrator, and a district representative.

Determine the mission and vision of the school's technology department. The mission and vision should be encompassed in two short statements that explain what the overall purpose of the school's technology plan is. Generally, these statements include information about teaching students to effectively use technology to enhance their education.

Determine the needs and desires of the school. Create a list of current inventory along with a list of needed hardware and software and a wish list of other desired equipment.

Writing Stage

Begin the plan with the mission and vision statements as well as a list of goals the plan should accomplish. The goals should be split into two categories: short-term and long-term.

Develop a timeline for reaching the goals in the plan and determine who is responsible for ensuring that each goal is carried out within the anticipated time frame.

Once a general timeline has been developed, create a plan for implementing each goal.

Create a budget for technology for each of the goals. Include a section that explains where the funding for technology will come from and what to do if funding is no longer available or more funding is needed.

Create steps to evaluate the technology plan on a regular basis and allow for changes based on new technology.
