Yeah, just apply cold. When they're desperate like that, you've got them by the balls, haven't you?

It has happened! I have been sent five contracts (including the university mentioned in this post).

In any case, I will take your advice. Thank you.

Too many contracts to choose from is a good problem to have: worry about that when it happens.

Right now, and I mean right now because many universities are discovering this week that their new FTs didn't show up or are insane, compile a list of Guangdong Universities, their FAO department emails, and email your resume.

I see, I see.

This is my first ESL position overseas, and I am little anxious over this whole process. I looked around the web to no avail, but when should I just go "well, they ignored me" and sign another contract?

The contract used for universities is often standardized by the province. And many universities are loath to modify the contract, choosing to add an 'addendum' with additional provisions, some that in fact contradict items in the provincial boilerplate.

If you are not sent an invitation letter, I can't imagine why the university would try to hold you to a contract.

Even after you sign the contract, I would recommend that you continue evaluating other offers until you have a Z-visa in hand.

tldr: agent says changes cannot be made to a contract for a public university. is he bullshitting me?

While I try to stick away from recruiters, ended up talking with Guangzhou Saintshine Education Service Co. Ltd. and they pointed me towards Guangdong Communication Polytechnic. I'm interested and have continued the dialogue sending him all the forms short of a signed contract.

Earlier he said changes cannot be made to the contract, but I want to put room for signature on each page and a clause for lawful termination of the contract if the college doesn't send me an invitation letter (for example if the agency does) and if they don't send an invitation letter in 40 days.

Is what he said bullshit or can public universities only use a single contract without alterations? Normally I would call bullshit, but with China and schools being state run...
