I worked for Sally in 2003, and unlike many other teachers, I actually chose to finish my contract, managed to push for a raise for the extra month I stayed, got my "trust fund" back and my bonus, and walked out of Taiwan $5000 richer... after sending lots of money home earlier. However, I must say that the only reason I enjoyed my time there was because I was employed at the school she owns, so I didn't have to travel much outside, worked extra hours on the side (which may have been illegal but apparently so was what she was doing), and, most importantly, moved out of the converted classroom. The worst thing about Sally's arrangement (even the "trust fund") is by far the accomodation. Everything you have read is true: it sucks. However, I understsand that it is unusual for teachers in Taiwan to have free housing. When I said I wanted to move out, they said ok, and helped me find a place nearby that was a one room en-suite with a WINDOW!!!! for NT$7000/month. It solved a lot of problems for me, including the one about random pay deductions. (I can't believe she still hasn't worked that out!!!) So, Sally, if you're reading this, for God's sake, ditch the trust fund and get a decent apartment for your teachers so that you can justify all the deductions!! For those who are thinking about going, it ain't bad, it pays ok, it ain't great either
