If conditions persist from bad events that happened a long time ago, then the present conditions have to be improved.
BUt it the bad events are part of history, then people should move on. Don't forget history (because, as you know, it would repeat itself) but move on.
Think Yougoslavia: People had grudges (and the facts behind the grudges were horrible) going back to the 15th century, well documented, with hatred still fuming. They were stuck in that hatred. Something was done and the present situation is much better; most people are moving on. They still honor their ancestors who were mutilated, tortured, raped, killed: this is a good thing to remember and honor. But they are moving on, focusing on present problems, the economy, the environment, the future of their children that they want to be better than their own future, etc. Don't you think this is how progress has happened over the millennia?
