Resume and Interview Tips

Create Compelling Resumes - Top Five Tips For Creating An Effective And Compelling Resume
By:Rico Pacioli

On the job hunt, you need to be thinking on the frequency of, "What will set me apart from other applicants?" In order to help you build an outstanding resume (one that will literally stand out), here are the top five tips for creating a resume that is both effective and compelling:

1. Use a clearly defined "Objective." This is right at the top of the resume and it tells your future employer that you are there for the right reason. Keep it short (usually only one sentence) but descriptive. Exactly what is your objective in gaining a position with this firm? What position? What

2. Keep the length of your resume to ONLY ONE PAGE. References will usually be separate or on a company application that they will have you fill out at the time of your interview so don't worry about fitting them on to your resume. There is no reason for your resume to be long and wordy. Keep it short and to the point even if you have a lot that you can put on your resume.

3. Make reference to the company from which you are seeking employment. Companies want to see that you have done your research on the company and have some idea of what you are getting yourself into. Look the company up on the web and read up on information regarding the key executives, clients, company accomplishments/honors, and other interesting or relevant information. Including minor and subtle references to this information is a great undercover way of showing your future employer that you really do belong with them.

4. Try to include interesting facts about yourself. These days companies emphasize the importance of diversity and an exciting company culture. If you've played piano for fifteen years or speak three languages, by all means, let them know. You can create a special "Hobbies" section at the bottom of your resume and list (only about one or two lines) of your hobbies and interests. These also make really great talking points during an interview that will help you build rapport.

5. Tailor your resume as closely as you can to the job description. Doing this makes your resume super-relevant to the job. You should include a short description with your job experience, which is the perfect time to explain how those positions built your leadership skills or taught you effective communication if those are things that your future employer is looking for in job candidates.
