Resume and Interview Tips

Writing A Resume
By:Azhar Victor

Writing a resume and writing it well makes the difference between an applicant being considered or otherwise for a follow-up assessment. The resume should essentially be able to communicate to the reader that an applicant has the required qualifications and experience for an available vacancy. Bearing in mind that it is not unusual for employers to receive hundreds if not thousands of applications for just one vacancy, the resume must be written with the objective of making a positive first impression. Usually applications go through different levels of screening or short listing. The first level is where the main eligibility factors are considered. Depending on the vacancy, this could include age, gender and qualifications. Therefore, these are to be made apparent at first sight.

Preparing To Write A Resume

List down all relevant information. Add important details.

Categories the information into appropriate sections. These are usually made up of experience, skills and education. Each of this can be divided into sub-sections. For example, experience can be sub-divided into main and other relevant experience.

When writing the resume, make constant reference to the requirements which could be in the form of a job description or details as given in a job advertisement.

Choose a suitable format and layout to present the information. Customize it to meet the main requirements of a particular advertisement. Decide on how best to present the information in your resume. Is it to be in reverse chronological order, by qualification or a bit of both?

Write the resume in an active rather than a passive voice. Avoid being an "I" specialist by the minimum usage of the word. It is better to make a statements such as "Qualified in Nuclear Physics from XYZ University" or "Authored an article on metal fatigue" and so on.

Other Important Details Of A Resume

Provide your full name and address with complete contact and alternate contact details. State the purpose of your application. Is it for a specific position or any other suitable vacancies? If you have extensive qualifications and experience, elaborate on the main ones and summarize the rest. When listing employment history, you may need to give details on the most relevant and summarize the others. In terms of qualifications you may need to separate them into academic and professional qualifications or any other suitable headings. Over and above the inclusion of all required details, ensure that your resume is checked and re-checked for correct spelling and grammar.
