Resume and Interview Tips

A Resume That Will Get You a Job
By:Geetika Jain

For a jobseeker, it is important to make sure that he does all that will ensure he gets the job he is looking for. The first step towards getting a job is applying right. The resume that you prepare and send across to a recruiter will more or less determine your chances of getting that job. It is therefore necessary to prepare a resume that exhibits your skills positively and leaves a good impression on the recruiter.

The resume should begin with a short personal description about yourself and why the employer should hire you. You should be able to identify those selling points and key competencies that the employer is looking for and based on that, the resume should be developed. You must also highlight your relevant skills and work experience that matches the recruiters needs. Try to avoid standard resumes and develop a CV that truly sleeks about your suitability for the job applied for.

There are a few key details that need to be mentioned in the resume. Firstly, youre your resume by presenting the required personal details such as name, date of birth, contact details, nationality, and marital status.

Next, one should mention the educational qualification. This would include your degrees, diplomas or certificates. Always list your most recent educational qualification first, then the one acquired prior to that and so on. Do mention your grades and percentage if they are noteworthy. If not, dont mention.

Then, the most important part is to highlight your work experience. Start with the most recent job that you were in. Write in details about your responsibilities, the projects that you have undertaken, the trainings that you have undergone and also the accolades that you have received at your workplace. Do mention any initiatives that you have taken. This is the part that the recruiter is most interested in so be careful while preparing it.
Also, mention any internship/summer training that you have undergone. Write about the position you held, the time period in which you were trained in that organization and also write a brief description of your role and responsibilities. Do prepare yourself for the questions relevant to your work experience.

Then, you should also mention your key achievements in the resume. In this section, try to list examples that are quite recent. Through this section, the employer will get an idea of what motivates you and what you regard as success. So, draft it carefully.

Some jobseekers tend to write about their hobbies in detail. While, one should mention the hobbies, this should be done in brief. You should only write the necessary information in this section. While writing about your hobbies and interests, remember that through this you will be demonstrating your skills and personality traits. Try to show skills which are relevant for the role you are interested in. The employer may also ask you to elaborate in detail about what you have written here. The information which you give should make sense to your job application.

In the end, people do mention references. It is generally required to give a reference of your previous employer. This is required for background check. However, you can simply write references are available on request here. Employers will ask for references only when they have made up their mind to hire you and are in the last leg of gathering information about you.
Other important thing to keep in mind is the structure and composition of the resume. Dont make it too long and stuff it with unnecessary information. This will put off the employer. Most of the recruiters prefer a short and crisp resume. Your resume should not be more than two pages long. Always write the most relevant information on the first page of the CV. It is up to you to decide the relative importance of the facts of your life and give the important ones more space. Do not make a cluttered resume but avoid gaps. Keep sentences short and concise and avoid long paragraphs. Break the paragraphs with bullet points.

It is very important that you never make any false or exaggerated claims on your resume. You will most likely be exposed and this will completely ruin your chances of getting a job. Also, dont mention the expected salary in the resume. You may either underestimate or overestimate yourself. Either way, it will not do you any favors. You should negotiate this after you have got the job.

Once your resume is prepared, ask a senior and an experienced person to read your resume once and suggest improvements. Also, get it checked for any grammatical or spelling mistake.

Following all this, your perfect resume will be ready. With a good resume in hand, you are ready to apply for jobs of your choice. Before attending any interview, go through your resume thoroughly and be prepared to field any questions based on it.
