Resume Formats - 3 Tips For Selecting a Resume Format That Works For You
By:Janet Payne

Writing your resume can be confusing when you see the variety of resume formats and templates available online and in resume writing books. How do you select a resume format that is right for you? Here are a few guidelines to help you choose a resume format that helps you create a fabulous resume.

Highlight Your Best Qualifications

When writing your resume, you want to make sure you highlight your experience and skills that will get you a great job. Make sure that your resume format contains sections that will showcase your best qualifications. Typically, the sections that contain your best qualifications should appear towards the top of your resume.

Choose an Overall Look that Communicates

Let the overall look of your resume communicate who you are and what you can do. If you are seeking a VP position, a traditional resume format that is crisp, clean, and professional if the proper choice. But if you are looking for a position in graphic design, show the employer your skills by designing your own resume format. If you are a photographer, use one of your photos as a background picture for your resume. Get creative, but remember to include resume standards such as contact information, employment history, and education.

Do Not Let the Formatting Take Over

It is easy to get caught up in technicalities when writing a resume. The truth is, there is not one way to write a resume. Your resume is your way to tell an employer why they should interview and/or hire you. As long as you include the information the employer needs to know to make that decision, and present it in an appealing manner, you can alter the resume format to fit your needs
