Revamp Your Resume Or Revamp YOU? Big Steps For Job Results
By:Charles Moldenhauer

The typical job seeker's "rush to resume" hang up continues to baffle this executive job coach because it leaves out the absolutely necessary work on the real issues. I often see new job seekers rush to revamp the resume and send it out before assessing their situation and creating an effective plan.

Assessment and Planning

If you have gone through assessing your situation, the job of building your marketing plan, only then you can think about building the key components of that plan which are resume, cover letter, bio and Internet visibility program.

Think About YOU

Hold everything before you plunge ahead. No manager, professional or top executive can afford to conduct a job search without considering how he or she communicates. You will need to take a careful look at your own personal revamp before you begin building the key components. Remember that YOU are really the key component! It is often a forgotten but important part of a total job search assessment and program. Your revamping effort needs to consider every aspect of how YOU communicate:

Words- Sharpen and clarify your thoughts and responses. Modify the words you speak, and in your resume and letters. Record yourself talking and you will probably want to pick up the pace and modify the language.

Presence- Here the video tape is invaluable. Try to practice tough questions and check your posture as usually it is either to rigid or to relaxed. If you appear stilted or unnatural it may create a very negative impression. Practice improving with your job coach.

Appearance- Make the new model look new but appropriate. Dress one level above the position you are seeking. Pitch those old glasses and match it with being in better physical shape. These will make a powerful impact on improving your presence.

Technology- Upgrade your technology and start to use ipods and portable devices, and get your email via handheld while you are on the move. Tap the Internet for current trends, industry
activity and more connections.

Activities-Interests- Take on some new activities. The ones that seem to work for job seekers and create personal energy are: working out, two day seminars, cutting edge talks, and exposure to new thinking and ideas. Reading more during the job search is universal. Downloading pod casts of business speakers is one of the newer, valuable and inexpensive steps you can take.

Now the new version of YOU is coming together, you are on your way to a crystal clear YOU, and your new model is appealing to the current market of buyers. Words, presence, appearance, technology and activities - interests are helping to get you ready to challenge the new opportunities. Tackle them at the same time you begin to build your other marketing components. Now YOU are ready...to break down the barriers to a great job offer.
