Resume and Interview Tips

Management Job Interview Tips
By:Kay Miranda

Interviewing makes people nervous. While you might be adept at managing an office or department, portraying yourself as the perfect candidate in an interview is difficult if you don't prepare properly and practice the right techniques. Standard interview techniques should be tailored for the management position and by the demands of the particular company.

Dress According to Corporate Culture
It is important to prepare yourself for the environment you are entering into. One great way to do this is in how you dress. Dress well and be well-groomed. The clothing you choose should reflect the clothing of those already working for the company. You want to project an image that you already work there and are part of the team. For men, dressing in muted grays and blues is a smart choice. Women dressed in black convey a sense of authority, but you might want to tone it down with blues, grays and whites. Determine whether the position you are applying for requires traditional business attire. If it is, then look for a suit that isn't too flashy. If the position doesn't require traditional suit and tie, make sure that you still are well groomed and have pressed clothes that fit well.

Know the News
Take some time before your interview and read the newspaper. This will help you be updated on any news that pertains to your industry. Information is power, especially in a management position. The more information you walk in with the better off you will be. Even if there is nothing in the news that pertains to the industry in which you are applying, being on top of current events could will help you engage in small talk when you first get in.

Prepare Your Own Interview Questions
Every interview guide will suggest you role play and prepare answers to probable questions. This helps you answer questions without stuttering and fumbling. But don't stop there. When you are in an interview, it is your time to interview the company as well to see whether they can provide you with the position that best suits your career goals. At the end of most interviews, you will be given the opportunity to ask questions. This is your chance. By asking well-thought out questions, not only are you demonstrating your assertiveness, you are showing your worth to the interviewer. Some questions to think about presenting are, "If I were given this job, what would help me start off on the right foot with my new team?" or "Are there any things to keep in mind as to what has worked in this unit and what hasn't worked previously?" This shows you are solution-oriented.
