Resume and Interview Tips

Last Minute Job Interview Tips
By:Cynthia Measom

After researching the company, practicing answering job interview questions and putting together the perfect outfit to prepare for your interview, there are some last minute things you can do to help you succeed as you face your interviewer for the first time. Sometimes it's the small details that make a big difference.

Arrival Time
Plan to arrive at the interview five to 10 minutes early so you will be there waiting when you are called for the interview. If you are late, you will make a negative first impression, which will likely set the tone for the interview.

Greeting
Greet your interviewer by name accompanied by a warm smile and a firm handshake to make a confident impression. Don't squeeze his hand too hard, but don't offer a limp hand, either.

Eye Contact
Make eye contact with the person who interviews you as you listen to what she has to say and while you answer questions. If looking directly into someone's eyes makes you uncomfortable, focus on the bridge of the person's nose. It will appear to her as if you are looking directly in her eyes, which will allow the person to feel as if you are genuine and sincere. Avoid staring intensely for too long. The key is to make eye contact for three to five seconds, break the gaze, then make eye contact again.

Body Language
Sit up straight and keep your attention focused on the interviewer. Cross your legs at the ankles, if you must, and rest your hands in your lap without fidgeting. If you are wearing a dress or skirt, place your knees together. Lean forward a bit in your chair when listening to the interviewer to indicate that you are interested in what he has to say.

Be Positive
No matter what your past experiences have been, put a positive spin on everything you tell the interviewer. If you had a bad experience with a supervisor in the past, don't even mention that, focus on the positive information regarding the position you held. End the interview with a positive comment that lets the interviewer know that you have a good attitude and you are enthusiastic about possibly working there. Include comments such as: "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview for the position. I would welcome the chance to work here."
