Resume and Interview Tips

Characteristics of Resumes for Teachers
By:Aruna Murthy Anaparti

A resume is a document that presents a person's skills and achievements. Resumes of teachers and educators should be professional, succinct and well-written, and have a high degree of attention to detail. The resume must accurately reflect the teacher's expertise, skills, goals, achievements, previous job experience, and most important, provide an account of his qualifications.

Edit the resume to eliminate typographic and grammatical errors, and spelling mistakes. Use the same font type and text-formatting style throughout.

Profile
Your resume must tell the teacher selection committee what kind of a person you are. Use powerful words when preparing your profile and introducing yourself, and don't exaggerate. Include key action words or phrases like "motivated," "self-driven," "people-person," "effective communication skills" and "rapport with students."

A teacher's resume must clearly reflect how he intends to help students grow academically. Therefore, describe what teaching methods you would use to achieve the desired outcome. Also state how you plan to encourage all-round personality development of students.

Objectives
A teacher's resume must clearly state what she is looking for professionally. State your goals precisely. Use bullets to outline your ideas. This keeps the document crisp and easy to understand. Excessive use of superlative phrases is not effective. At the same time, simple words won't impress. You must use jargon pertaining to your subject or field. Your goals and objectives could include what you wish your students to learn not just as students but also as good citizens.

List of Accomplishments
Include an updated list of your accomplishments. Include any certification as well as academic or nonacademic personality development courses. The placement of information on your resume is important. Follow a logical sequence in presenting your information. List of accomplishments must appear after the name, address and contact details. Use a table to present information in a systematic manner about your educational degree, graduation and/or post-graduate courses taken, followed by the name of the college or university, grades awarded and the year of completion. Computer skills have an important place in your list of accomplishments; so, do not forget to include them.

Teachers must be up to date on the latest modes of teaching. Mention the number of students you have taught along with the subject and teaching aids you have used. Give details, and highlight how you are different from and better than your competitors.

Relevance of Content
A teacher's resume must show that he or she is versatile and willing to grow with every experience. It must be a concise document. Only related information must be supplied. There is no need to mention high-school credentials. Anything that does not involve teaching or assisting children in education doesn't have to be cited. If the information on the resume exceeds one page, it can be continued to another page. Hobbies and special interests are not considered to be crucial information.
