Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Writing For Teachers
By:Brian G Chadra

Teaching is one of the few professions that require the employee to keep going back to school in order to prove their worth. It is also a thankless job that typically means the same amount of time in the classroom is spent out of the classroom on such things as preparation, organizing field trips, chaperoning events and checking papers. Finding a job is even becoming tougher these days as the number of school aged children is starting to decline. When applying for a job, what should be included to pique the interest of a school superintendent?

Assuming that you know a little bit about the parts of a resume, we will only look at things that should be included and not compiling an actual document. First of all, include all of your education as a background for this position. Be sure to list all of your undergraduate work and any majors or minors that you have gained along the way. If you are a second career person, list the other "educational experiences" that you have had. This real world stuff can actually work for you in a progressive school system. By having answers to questions like "how are we ever going to use this stuff?", you will become an expert in the eyes of a youngster.

For the young teacher, list your supervised observation and student teaching stints and what you accomplished. Be sure to list any special skills that you have that might make for an interesting club or group for the school. Another good tip is to mention your areas of expertise from the teaching certificate. Sometimes it's good to let the human resources person see that at least twice to keep you fresh in their minds. Above all, get your strengths in the resume and let them shine for you. Now go and get that teaching job. Good luck!
