Great Jobs for Ex-Teachers
By:Timothy Burns

Educational reform and increased public financial difficulties are causing many schoolteachers to lose their jobs. As public sector funding resources diminish, funding for schools is often one of the first things to be cut. Competition between private or charter schools and their public school counterparts can also cause public school teachers to find themselves out of work. Nevertheless, educators have many marketable skills that can be used in and around the educational community.

Tutoring
Teachers can find employment tutoring traditional students as well as at-risk students in urban school districts. The specialized skills and training which teachers bring to the tutoring table will benefit students who do not learn well in a traditional classroom. For some students, one-on-one tutoring is the missing component in turning educational frustration and academic success.

Proofreading, Editing, and Professional Writing
Teachers can find work online with companies hiring professional writers, editors or proofreaders. The competencies which teachers develop in the classroom translate well into a second career within language arts. Businesses are also in constant need of talented writers who can translate their marketing and branding messages into memorable ad campaigns and clear company training publications. Quality writers are also in high demand to create engaging and informative content for Internet websites.

Lobbying for Educational Reform
Much of our current national educational policy is based on legislation that passed decades ago. The Internet has revolutionized how individuals receive information and educational skill sets students must bring to the marketplace. No one understands the strengths and weaknesses of the current educational system better than a former teacher. Teachers who bring their passion and experience to the lobbying industry benefit teachers, students and the greater educational community.

Teaching English Abroad
While America struggles to teach English to immigrants who come to schools not understanding our common language, teachers are needed overseas to instruct all ages of people in English as a second language. The English language is one of the most complex on the planet, full of inconsistencies and exceptions to rules. A teacher's classroom experience is a highly valued skill, and ex-teachers can be well paid traveling abroad to teach English.
