Resume and Interview Tips

Interviewing Techniques for Youth
By:Cassandra Scheidies

Teenagers may want to get a part-time job for experience or to have some extra money. When interviewing for that first or second job, many teens may experience anxiety. Certain techniques will help an interviewer see the potential that the youth has to offer. In order for a youth to make a good impression at a job interview, she must understand how to establish professionalism with her potential employer.

Research
Education.com suggests that you should research the organization for your interview. Many teenagers may forget to learn about the organization, making it difficult to answer questions in the interview. Doing your homework about the organization will put you ahead of the crowd.

Dress Professionally
Teen boys should wear nice pants and a button down shirt, avoiding sneakers and jeans. Teen girls should wear nice pants or a long skirt and a nice shirt, avoiding short skirts and flip flops. Wearing professional attire to an interview shows that you take the potential job seriously.

Practice
Ask your parent or sibling to practice asking you interview questions. This will help you prepare for the interview and seem poised when you attend the real one. Have your parent or sibling give you tips on how to improve your skills for the day of the interview.

Showcase Your Talents
You may not have a lot of experience, but involvement in a part-time job or school activity can showcase your abilities. If you apply for a coaching position, discuss the sports you have played. If you apply for a fast food restaurant, show that you have participated in home economics or that you cook at home. If you have baby-sat or delivered newspapers, mention that during your interview. Any part-time job or activity involvement shows your willingness to work hard for a goal.

Show Confidence
Many teenagers appear timid in interviews, according to Quintessential Careers. Use a strong voice when answering questions. Sit up straight to show that you have confidence in yourself. Maintain eye contact so that you do not appear intimidated.
