Resume and Interview Tips

Effective Motivational Interviewing Techniques & Tips
By:Mary Jane

Before you start a job interview, prepare by teaching yourself interview techniques and tips. While you may be nervous before the interview, learn to listen to how the interviewer asks the questions, as this could help you provide the answers the interviewer is seeking. If you provide strong answers in your interview, your motivation to do a good job may influence the interviewer.

Effective Preparation
Preparing before an interview is a common practice for potential job candidates. Preparation is one of the most important things a job candidate can do in hopes of having a successful job interview. The better the candidate can answer questions asked by the interviewer, the more confident and motivated she may end up feeling during the interview. Analyze your resume and pick out things that you would not normally discuss in your job interview. For example, the fast-food restaurant job you had in high school may not stand out as impressive on your resume, but the position may have taught you about customer service, effective communication and working on a team.

Question Formats
Once you are sitting in the interview, listen to the way the interviewer is asking the questions. More specifically, determine whether or not the questions are open-ended questions. For example, if the interviewer is asking a question that allows you to discuss your answer rather than simply answering yes or no, use the opportunity to talk about yourself and your experiences. An example is the interviewer asking you to describe your academic background. Use this to sell yourself in terms of your school experience. The more you get to share about yourself, the more motivation you may feel in the interview.

Provide Evidence
For each question you are asked, provide examples as evidence for your answers. For example, if the interviewer asks about your strengths, identify what they are and provide examples of how you have used them. You will be able to build up your experience in each answer using this method of answering. This is a motivational strategy in itself.

Avoid "Yes, But..." Answers
One of the things that can work against your motivation during a job interview is focusing on the negative aspects in your answers. Avoid using "yes, but..." replies in your interview and focus on the positives rather than the negatives. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a software program you have worked very little with, do not answer yes and add that it was a short time. Instead, focus on the positive fact that you have worked with the program before and would enjoy doing so again to expand your knowledge.
