Resume and Interview Tips

Interview Techniques for Teachers
By:Kay Miranda

When interviewing for a teacher position, you want to come across as capable of teaching the curriculum, handling a class of students and being compassionate to the needs of kids as they may arise. Be prepared to answer questions about your background, how you view the students in the school you are applying to, and your views on teaching curriculum. Remember to dress professionally and be yourself as much as possible in the interview.

Curriculum
Review your own experiences to describe how you have developed and executed effective lesson plans. It is important to be clear about how you break down a day of instruction as well as a single period. Be enthusiastic about your desire to teach at this particular institution and the reasons you are a good fit for the school and student population. If you utilize special technology, methods or models when teaching, be sure to describe how this improves the learning environment for students.

Professional Development
Teachers must constantly keep up with new teaching methods, child psychology studies and technologies to be effective. Make sure you are prepared to discuss why you decided to be a teacher and what you do on an ongoing basis to improve your skills. Teachers must deal with a variety of stresses daily, and it is important that you have means that help you cope with stress so that it does not leak into the classroom. It is important for teachers to have a balanced life.

Inspiration
Teaching is more than getting kids to learn the basics. It is inspiring children to want more, to embrace their personal talents and strive for greater things. It also involves inspiring parents to be involved in their kids' education. Teachers who love what they do radiate a stronger desire for learning throughout the community with students, parents and even peers.

Special Needs
There will be an opportunity in the interview to discuss how you deal with highly gifted children, special needs children and English learners. Every teacher has students that require a change in curriculum. Good teachers recognize these students and intervene early to challenge a gifted student or adapt the curriculum or call for special testing for a student who needs it. Review previous experiences and be prepared to explain how you determine what kids might need a different educational track.
