Resume and Interview Tips

What to Bring to a Teaching Job Interview
By:Kathy Adams McIntosh

Teachers come to the classroom each day ready to enlighten their students with well prepared lesson plans. Before the teacher even makes it to the classroom, however, she must get hired for the job. The teacher should be well prepared with materials showing her potential employer that she is ready to teach.

Samples of Technology Skills
Technology is integral to learning in many classrooms. The job applicant should bring documents and examples showing her use of technology in the classroom. Electronic files including samples of tests administered on laptop computers, PowerPoint presentations and printouts of email communications with students may demonstrate the applicant's ability to use technology to reach students. The applicant should also bring any video recordings she created in the classroom, such as a video conference with a guest speaker.

Sample Lesson Plans
Lesson plans provide direction for the day as a guide for how students are taught and what they learn. The job applicant should bring along sample lesson plans that she has used in the past. If this is the first teaching job, the applicant should create a lesson plan and bring copies of it to the interview. The applicant may discuss how she created the lesson plan and why she included each activity in the plan.

Student Work Samples
If the job applicant has taught in the classroom before, he should gather samples of his students' work. The samples demonstrate that his students can understand and learn the concepts he teaches. Graded samples also display the applicant's approach to providing feedback. Positive comments show that the applicant wants the students to succeed and reinforces their work.

Classroom Displays
Students walk into a classroom and form their opinion of the class based on the appearance of the room. The applicant should bring posters or photographs that demonstrate how his classroom is set up. The applicant can discuss the educational topics displayed in each poster. Photographs of classroom displays or bulletin boards show the interviewer how the applicant engages students through the visual classroom. The applicant can also discuss how the students use the displays in their activities.
