Resume and Interview Tips

Interviewing Skills for a Teacher
By:Carol Deeb

Interviewing for a teaching position takes practice. Teachers are an important asset to a school system. How they perform in the classroom determines how well students are prepared to be successful adults in the future. You need to show that you have what it takes to lead a classroom and educate a generation.

Experience and Knowledge
The best way to show the interview board that you possess the skill to teach is to explain your experience, if you have any. If you have your single-subject credential, the board will expect that you have the knowledge necessary to be a teacher. However, in the course of the interview, when answering various questions, your experience and knowledge should be apparent. Preface your responses by telling the board how you handled a situation at your last teaching assignment. Show your subject knowledge by using references to specific terminology that you would use to teach.

Instructional and Communication Skills
Teachers instruct a classroom by communicating information to the students. In addition, as a teacher, you have interaction with parents, the principal, school board and peers. Displaying your communication skills during the interview is vital. Look at each interviewer, if there is more than one, when answering questions. Keep your thought process logical and don't digress or become distracted. Speak clearly and answer the question posed to you. Pretend that you are instructing a class so that the interview board sees you display your communication skills.

Planning Skills
Teachers spend much time planning their curriculum and schedule. You must ensure that subjects are taught for the amount of hours required by your state. Also, you need to meet educational requirements assessed in standardized testing. In addition, sometimes it is necessary for you to plan the entire year in advance. To show the interview board that you have the planning skills required of a teacher, explain your experiences where being organized were a benefit. If you are right out of college and have not held a professional job, tell the interviewers how planning helped you to achieve a high grade point average. If you have work experience, explain the duties that you performed where organization and planning benefited the company.

Classroom Skills
Controlling a classroom of children, whether young or teen, takes skill and patience. As a teacher, you are required to maintain order in the class and with each child, because some personalities can be overwhelming. To show an interview board that you have the skills to discipline when needed and not bother your superiors with every rebellious act that you encounter, explain your philosophy on how to distract and redirect children so that you can communicate the lessons to them. If you have training or have taken coursework in psychology, let the interview board know what you learned about classroom dynamics and control. Also, share any successful techniques that you used when you were student teaching.
