Resume and Interview Tips

How to Write a Professional Resume for Teaching
By:Sarah Mollman

Whether you are aiming to claim a classroom of your own for the first time or looking for a different teaching position, a flawless teaching resume is a must for snagging the perfect job. Make your resume organized, professional and a true stand-out. Get ready to interview, because a well-written resume is sure to catch recruiters' attention.

Gather information about dates of education or employment, experience or certifications for easy access.

Create your resume document on your computer.
Create a heading for your resume in a new document on your computer. Type your first name, middle initial and last name, centered on the page and in a larger font than the rest of your text. Type the entire resume in a simple Times New Roman font.

Type your address, phone number and email address into the heading.
Place your home address directly under your name in a smaller size font. On the next line below your address, enter your phone number on the far left and your email address on the far right. Copy and paste this heading onto each page of your resume that follows, including your reference page.

Type "Objective" in bold print on the next line, and left-align it. Next to this term, in nonbold print, state your objective. For example, it could say: "To obtain a teaching position at [the name of the school], in order to [state your reasoning for applying or what you will bring to that school]."

Include your educational background.
List "Education" in bold print on the next line, and left-align it. Following this word, in nonbold print, state the college or university you graduated from, the city and state of the school, and your major/date of graduation. If you attended more than one college, list the most recent first.

Include teaching experience.
Type "Teaching Experience" in bold print on the next line, left-aligned. Follow it with your teaching experiences in order of most recent to the least recent. Include any previously held teaching or teaching-related positions as well as student teaching or field experiences. For your most recent or most important teaching experiences, add three bullet points below each, describing with action verbs your accomplishments. List each teaching experience on a separate line.

Include additional experience.
Write "Additional Experience" in bold, left-aligned print on the next line. Next to that, in regular print, list additional work-related experiences that add to your marketability. They do not necessarily have to be related to teaching and can be other work you have done that enhances your marketability. List each additional experience on a separate line.

Place "Honors" left-aligned in bold print on the next line. Next to that, in regular print, include any scholarships or recognition you have received. You may further describe these items in one or two bullet points below where each is listed. List each honor on a separate line.

Type "Activities" in bold, left-aligned print on the next line. Next to that, in regular print, list any activities you have been involved with--teaching or nonteaching--that enhance your resume. This should include organizations you belong to or volunteer opportunities you have taken. List each activity on a separate line.

Include certifications.
Include "Certifications," left-aligned in bold print, on the next line if you have not exceeded two pages already and feel your certifications could give you an edge over other applicants. Add any additional training you have received, such as Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, CPR and First Aid, or High Risk Behaviors and Substance Abuse. These certifications should reflect your teaching background and be relevant to the job for which you are applying.

Enter references on the final page (aim to make this the third page). Make sure that your heading has been copied and pasted onto this page. Under a "References" left-aligned heading, list three to five people who can speak positively about your teaching skills.
