Resume and Interview Tips

How to Send Resumes for Teaching Positions
By:Jason Brick

Applying for a teaching job usually means sending in a standardized application package This package may or may not include an actual resume along with other materials such as transcripts, a copy of your license and an essay or statement of teaching philosophy. In some cases, the school district prefers you to fill out an online form about your education and experience, which might run alongside or completely replace your resume. For most school districts, this process has moved almost completely online.

List the school districts or teaching positions you desire based on your personal priorities. For example, if your main priority is staying in your current community, narrow your search to surrounding districts. Likewise, if your priority is teaching a specific subject, narrow your search according to what districts are hiring for that position.

Visit the website of the first school district on your list. Find the job listings for that school district. These are often on a page named "Jobs," "Careers" or "Human Resources." If not visible from the home page, look under "District Information." Also, many school district websites have a search option.

Click on the position you're interested in. This should bring up details of the position, including school, salary schedule and basic job duties. It should also include a button to click to apply for the position.

Complete the application page according to instructions. In some cases, you may need to come back to this step after gathering documentation or completing an essay or cover letter. If the application requires a resume, this is where you will include it. This may mean attaching a document or copying and pasting text into a window on the website.
