Resume and Interview Tips

How to Create a Teaching Resume
By:Erin Schreiner

Many schools begin the hunt for an appropriate teaching candidate to fill a vacant position by perusing stacks of resumes. A strong, well-written resume can mean the difference between obtaining an interview or failing to do so. By ensuring that your resume contains all of the requisite information, and that it clearly indicates your appropriateness for the position for which you are applying, you can dramatically increase your chances of obtaining a job.

Select a template. Word and similar word processing programs offer a number of pre-formatted resume templates to aid resume makers in creating their documents. Any pre-formatted template will do for the purpose of creating your teaching resume.

Compose a short resume. Your resume should be no longer than one page, reports the University of the Incarnate World. Potential employers are not going to dedicate too much time to perusing each resume. Make your resume short and to-the-point to ensure that potential employers don't miss out on something important.

Include permanent contact information. If you are just exiting college and planning to move, use the address of a friend or family member. Likewise, if you currently use a school email address, establish a free email address to use as your job hunting email account.

Write a concise objective. Make your objective one sentence, maximum. Clearly state what you would like to accomplish in your teaching in this sentence. For example, you might say, "To help youths enhance their reading and writing skills so they are prepared for the real world," if you intend to become an English teacher.

List your certifications. Be specific, including the grade levels for which you are certified as well as a list of courses.

List all applicable previous experience, including student teaching. If you have extensive teaching experience, it is permissible to leave student teaching off of your resume. If you lack experience, list only student teaching.

Include any honors or awards that you have received. List academic awards as well as extra-curricular awards if you intend to coach or advise any extra-curricular activities during your teaching career.

Note specific and applicable skills in the skills section, especially technology skills as many schools are keen to hire teachers who are technologically competent. Avoid listing obvious skills such as "communication skills."

Select and include at least three references. List your cooperative teacher as well as several college professors or advisers who can speak to your appropriateness for the job for which you are applying. Check with all references prior to listing them to ensure that they are willing to provide you with a reference.

Print your resume on high-quality resume paper. Printing your resume on high-quality paper makes you appear more like a qualified and professional candidate.
