Whether you just graduated with an undergraduate or graduate degree or you have been educating for years, your resume for teaching at a private school should focus on your teaching experience: full-time, part-time, student teaching, tutoring, formal experience and informal. Private schools have varying requirements when it comes to teacher certification, experience required or level of education required. If you do not meet the qualifications, consider whether you have equivalent experience to highlight in your resume and cover letter. Keep your teaching resume to one page unless you have extensive experience. Include a cover letter with your resume discussing your most relevant experience, your teaching philosophy and your interest in teaching in this particular private school.

Select or design a professional teaching resume template. "Use a neutral paper color and a professional looking font such as Times Roman, Arial, or Helvetica," says Amanda Post of A to Z Teacher Stuff. Set the resume's margins at 1 inch and use a font size no smaller than 11 points.

Enter your full name and contact information at the top of the page, using a professional email address and a font no larger than 14 points. Though confidence matters in teaching, communicate your confidence through strong language and layout rather than through large fonts or visual embellishments.

Draft a short and specific objective statement under your contact information. If you seek to teach high school mathematics and physics at The Wishmont School, state this explicitly. When applying to teach in private schools, use a unique objective statement for every resume you send out. If your resume will be posted on a job website and your objective must be generic, such as "teach Language Arts in a private school," omit your objective statement.

List your relevant teaching experience. Place all jobs, internships and volunteer positions in which you have taught in reverse chronological order, noting whether the institutions were private or public. If you have full-time teaching experience but it is not your most recent position, separate your experiences into subheadings and place "Full-Time Teaching" along with the correlating position or positions first.

List your education experiences, which should generally include institutions of higher learning, followed by a subheading called "Other Education" or "Workshops," listing the three to four most current or relevant teaching-related workshops or summer classes you have taken. If you attended the school to which you are applying to teach, add this information and move the education section up on the page, placing it before your experience section.

List any other skills and experiences that could be useful in a private school teaching job, such as computer skills, coaching experience or training you have completed in relevant areas, such as mediation or college counseling. Also note any foreign languages you speak or read and with what level of competence. Private schools often try to recruit internationally and strive for cultural diversity, so foreign language skills can be a true asset.
