How to Create a Teacher's Resume
By:Gwynita Leggington

If you plan to apply for a teaching position, you will need to prepare a resume to accompany your application. A resume is a summary of your relevant skills and qualifications, and many employers require applicants to submit a current resume when applying for a job. Your resume should display your appropriate teaching credentials and knowledge of the classroom environment. Learn the proper way to create a professional teacher’s resume.

Prepare an appropriate header for your resume. The header should include your primary contact information, such as your name, mailing address, phone numbers and a valid email address.

Determine your career objective. A career objective is a short statement that defines your career goals and describes the type of job you wish to obtain. Since you are applying for a teaching position, you should specifically state the grade level and subject(s) that you are interested in teaching.

Describe your educational credentials. You should provide details about the type of teaching degree(s) that you possess, the name of the institution where you completed your studies and the date that you earned the degree. You also may list relevant continuing education and professional development training. Be sure to include information about your state license or certification, too.

Create a section for your work experience. In this section, you should include all of your professional teaching experience in chronological order, beginning with your most recent position. You also should list your student teaching experience, internships and volunteer or tutoring experience. Be sure to state the employer’s name, dates of employment and your job duties for each position.

Highlight your job related skills. Determine which teaching skills you possess and briefly discuss them in this section. For example, a teacher should have strong written and communication skills, and be organized, creative, dependable, patient and computer literate.

Develop a section for your awards and accomplishments. Feel free to mention any type of special recognition that you received as a teacher. This is where to mention awards that you have received while in college or from community and social organizations.

Proofread your resume and look for errors. Once you have finished typing your resume, take time to read over it a couple of times and make sure everything looks correct. Make any necessary changes and print out a few copies of it. Don’t forget to save your resume to your computer and/or disc.
