Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Photo Tips
By:Rhonda McDowell

According to USA Jobs, the federal government's source for jobs and employment information, resume photographs should appear on the resume or application, not sent as an additional item with your employment package. Your photograph should shine above all others when including it on your resume, so take the time to create a professional-looking photo to ensure you make the right impression.

Prepare
Perform a trial run. Style your hair and wear clothing as you would for the official photo shoot. In the days leading up to having your photograph taken, drink plenty of water to give yourself healthy, hydrated skin. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine. The day prior to your photo shoot, get a good night's sleep and allow yourself time in the morning to apply any makeup to enhance your features.

Dress
Depending on your skin type, you may wish to complement your appearance with clothing. Choose a cool color such as blue or purple if you have a pink or rosy complexion, and a warmer color like mocha or red if your skin shade is darker or more golden. Avoid wearing solid white, as it can often wash out your complexion. Clothes with bold patterns may detract from the contours of your face.

Lighting
Taking your photograph with the correct background can make a great deal of difference. Utilize the warmer light of early morning and late afternoon to give your image a radiant glow. Use the camera's red-eye flash feature if you take the photograph indoors. Pose in front of a neutral background that does not detract from your appearance, and avoid excessive backlighting.

Pose
Posing at an angle to the camera slims your frame. Your "good side" is often the side on which your hair is parted. Pose with your lead shoulder slightly lowered to elongate the neck and create more dynamic angles. Stick out your chin slightly to avoid the appearance of a double chin. Just before you have your photograph taken, pinch your cheeks for that extra touch of color. Keep tissues handy if it is a particularly warm day to blot oil or sweat off your face.
