Resume and Interview Tips

Tips for Reasons for Leaving on a Resume
By:Ava Fails

Whether you are currently employed or unemployed, you must have a reason for leaving your last job on the ready during interviews. The key is that your reason ring positive to the interviewer. You want to express to a potential new employer that you treat your previous employers fairly.

Real Reasons for Leaving
People leave jobs for all kinds of reasons. Some reasons are through no fault of their own such as lay-offs, downsizing and business failures. Other situations are the direct result of employee behavior, wrongdoing and failure to deliver. It is your responsibility to prepare yourself to be asked about the nature of your departure from your last employer when interviewing for a new position. Ensure you have a statement fresh in your mind to answer this question in a positive manner.

Preparing for the Question
Remember that potential employers know that you are not signing up for life when you accept employment. Employers understand that the reasons you left your former job may not be under the best of circumstances. Prepare a written statement of moderate length explaining why you left. Provide a brief reason why you left, followed by any points you can discuss further.

Answering an Interviewer
Answer the question thoroughly but briefly and without excess elaboration based on the statement you prepared. Present yourself with honesty. Think past the actual circumstance when preparing to answer why you left. Seeking a position with growth potential is a perfectly acceptable answer. Maintain your focus on what the new job has that you are looking for rather than what your previous position lacked. Other reasons for leaving include having family matters requiring relocation, seeking more responsibility and securing a position that utilizes specific skills.

Answer any clarifying questions the interviewer may ask considering the additional points from your statement. Take every opportunity to focus on the assets you bring to this potential employer and company.
