Resume and Interview Tips

Tips on Mailing My Resume
By:Julie Hampton

The traditional way of passing on a resume is via postal mail. Sending a resume may seem as simple as dropping information into the mail. However, following a few tips from the size of envelope used to what information to include with a resume are important. When mailing a resume via email it is crucial to follow additional procedures so the resume can be properly viewed.

Address to a Specific Person
Address the envelope to a specific person. If unsure who will receive the resume, call the potential place of employment. Many times the human resources department will give the name of the interviewer, if asked who the hiring manager is a for a particular position. Double-check the spelling of first and last names.

Include a Cover Letter
Always send a cover letter with a resume. Cover letters should be written about the specific job opening and why you are a good fit for the position. Avoid sending a standard generic cover letter. Make sure the cover letter is addressed to a specific person.

Envelopes
Preserve the resume by using large envelopes. A 9-x-12-inch envelope will allow the resume and any attachments to be sent without any folds. A crisp resume free of folds and wrinkles will make a positive impression. Use an envelope that matches the resume paper for a coordinating look.

Remember Mailing Date
Track the mailing date. Once a resume has been mailed, waiting for an interview call seem nerve racking. Contact the human resources department or drop an email to the hiring manager asking where they are in the interview process and their time frame if there is no feedback within one to two weeks. This is especially important when interviewing with several companies--so you can weigh your best options.

Email Tips
Emailing is becoming a more common way to transmit a resume. Make sure to attach the email to the resume, however, also insert the resume information directly into the email. Some companies may filter attachments. Prior to sending, email the resume to yourself and several friends email addresses to see how the email looks on different computer screens. Print out the resume to ensure the layout and formatting stay the same.
