Resume and Interview Tips

Objectives Statements for Resumes
By:Steve Bradley

The first piece of information that a reviewer will read on a resume is the objective. An objective statement for a resume has four distinct goals. First, it must introduce the candidate and his primary job title. Second, the objective statement needs to provide a glimpse into the candidate's experience. Third, it names the exact position for which the individual is applying. Last, it needs to explain the candidate's motivation. All of this must be accomplished with one sentence that is both mechanically correct as well as stylistically appealing.

Introduce Yourself
First, you need to be accurate. If you are a teacher but have never held a position of responsibility, do not title yourself as a "Lead Teacher." You also want to take note of the terms used to describe the position for which you are applying. If you have been a department head and the job listing is for a "team leader" then it is fine to list your title as such. The closer your experience looks to what the hiring committee is searching for, the better your chances are of landing an interview.

Share Some Experience
The second aspect of an objective statement on a resume is experience. While the rest of the resume will give detail about your history, skills and abilities, the objective is like a one-sentence summary that encapsulates what you do. Choose two or three words or phrases for this. Ideally these will match some of the terms in the job listing. For example, if you are applying for a head teacher position the objective could read, "Certified Head Teacher with proven experience in curriculum creation, interdisciplinary teaching and differentiated instruction."

Name the Job
Next, the resume objective needs to spell out exactly what job you are applying for. Most of the time the human resource department will be hiring for a number of openings and you don't want them to have to search your resume to determine which one you are interested in.

Your Motivation
Finally, you need to explain why you want the position. Do not be self-centered here. Instead explain the type of environment you would like to work in. To continue with the above example, the complete objective could read like this, "Certified Head Teacher with proven experience in curriculum creation, interdisciplinary teaching and differentiated instruction seek head teacher position in a forward thinking school with a strong commitment to student achievement."
