Resume and Interview Tips

Can Your Resume Guarantee You an Interview Every Time?
By:Jarred J Talmadge

Think back to the last time you sent out a resume. When you did it, could you guarantee interviews from your resume? Chances are the resume disappeared into the black hole of resume submissions on the Internet, never to be seen again. Do you know why?

I was the guy at the other end of the black hole. As a former recruiter for Wall Street firms, an MBA, and a professional writer, I can tell you, what you think you know about the process of getting a job is most likely wrong.

When I started recruiting, a resume submitted though the Internet, for a job posting, actually got read by a human. That isn't the case anymore. The world has changed. Now there are at least two hundred applicants for every posting. Usually there are closed to four hundred. That's three hundred ninety nine people who will never hear from me because they won't be getting the job.

The recruiting industry has changed. We don't employ resume readers anymore. They used to be low paid clerks who spent their days reading resumes and passing on recommendations to the recruiters. Now it's all computerized and there are a million ways to get disqualified for a job.

So even if you are lucky enough to get through the computers, it doesn't guarantee your resume is even going to get read. You have thirty seconds at best to make an impression. That's all it takes anymore to decide whether your resume lives or dies. But it's not for the reasons you think.

Even if you are highly motivated, incredibly qualified and you have everything the employer wants, chances are you still aren't going to make it to the interview stage.

The biggest problem most job hunters face is their resume is out of touch with the employer. This means the information you are giving the employer isn't going to motivate the employer to call you. Just the opposite, it's going to get your resume trashed, before you even have a chance.

The fastest way to guarantee your resume lands in the trash is to keep submitting it. Emailing it multiple times, then calling to follow up, while leaving repeated messages is a sure fire way to get rejected. The last thing a recruiter wants is a stalker. Call me once, its okay. Call me twice and you are potentially a stalker, especially if I am hiring contractors or temporary workers.

There are techniques to guarantee your resume produces job interviews. However, chances are, if your resume isn't generating interview calls, it's because it's not getting read in the first place.
