Tips For Writing Resume Cover Letter
By:Felicia N John

Applying for a job for the first time, or looking for a job change, what is the most important thing you need? Your resume. The resume summarizes your qualifications and accomplishments. However, everyone has a resume so what is it that helps your resume get an edge over the others. The answer to this question is to attach a cover letter with your resume. Most of the employers now-a-days ask you to send you CV's across through email. Here, you get a very good chance to draft a letter that speaks about you, as the main body of the mail does not look good if left blank. Even if you are sending a hard copy of your resume via post, you can attach a letter along with your CV.

These cover letters give you a chance to speak to the prospective employer, while everyone struggles to just get their CVs screened. Many employers refer to these letters in their screening procedure. It makes the employer understand why you think you deserve this job, why should the employer give you a chance, and how your skills and qualifications will benefit the organization. To help you write a perfect letter, have a look at the points given below that tell you how to write a cover letter.

1. This letter is a formal letter, so you need to follow the format of a formal letter. It speaks about you, so you can best write it for yourself rather than copying it. A copied letter will not help fulfill the purpose.

2. The letter should be greeted and addressed to the right person. If you do not know the name of the person, you can call at the reception of the company and find out the name of the concerned person.

3. The letter should be an introduction to you and your resume. It has to be divided in three paragraphs. The first paragraph should speak about you and the position applied for. The second paragraph should detail on your qualifications, accomplishments and skills. This paragraph might some times be long so you can split it in two paragraphs for the reader's convenience. You can also use bullets to make it look simple.

4. The last paragraph of the letter should be such that it gives the chance to the reader to act. Ending it abruptly will spoil the purpose of writing this letter.

5. Mention about the enclosures in the last paragraph.

6. The language used in the letter should be simple but without any grammatical mistakes. First, make a rough draft, and if needed get it checked from someone before making a fair copy.

7. Thank the reader for sparing his/her time and sign your letter. Before mailing it, proof read the letter once again.

You just need to remember that your cover letter should replicate you and your skills, and convince the reader to look into your resume.
