Resume and Interview Tips

Effective Resume Writing - Is Your Resume Up To The Task?
By:Ron Sandifor

FACT: Qualified people who would be a great fit for a particular job get passed over because of an inadequate resume. Effective resume writing is the solution.

FACT: Your resume only has from 10-30 seconds in an initial visual scan to get you into the "call back" file. Effective resume writing will get you the call.

Even considering these stark realities, your resume is still the essential marketing piece for securing your first interview with a prospective employer. Is your resume up to the task? For instance, does it contain the right resume key words to bring it up when the hiring manager for your perfect job conducts a web search?

Effective resume writing is a continually evolving art. What worked two years ago will not get you an interview today. Actually, it is highly possible that your resume won't survive the initial automated scan of the Hiring Management Systems (HMS) or Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) utilized by many companies. These scanning systems continue to improve and will soon not only be able to identify keywords, but also the context in which they are being used.

In today's job market, a mediocre or worse resume is a total waste of your time to create and more importantly, a waste of the uneventful months that pass while you think that your resume is out there working for you. You may chalk it up to a bad job market when, in reality, it is your bad resume.

Your resume must be a powerful targeted missile that effectively communicates your skills and abilities sufficiently enough to inspire the reader to see you as a candidate who can help him/her achieve their goals thereby helping the company achieve its business goals. Further, your resume should be readily accessible when a manager or recruiter starts searching for someone with your unique skills and experience. If your resume is effectively written, it will be more likely to surface when the recruiter or hiring manager enters the search parameters.

Writing a resume that "works" has itself become a very specialized skill and unless you have the time to attend resume writing courses, you will be better served by employing certified resume-writing professionals. There is no single example of an effective resume for you to follow and there is too much at stake for you to lose a job opportunity because your resume could not convey how really great you would be in that particular position.
