Resume and Interview Tips

Writing an International Resume
By:Rajat Vashishta

When we started with our Resume writing service we never had thought that we would be writing international resumes. That assignment however did come one day and we were forced to write the resume for a teacher seeking a job abroad.

A lot of research went into the first draft and a lot of learning ensued and we realized that writing international resumes is not that difficult if you simply follow a few points. Below I have made a list of some essential things to be kept in mind when you are designing your resume for international applications.

1. Give your academics more and first coverage than your work history. Reason? For your perspective employer, you might be working in a local company out of your home at best; he can never find out exactly what you did! So for him, the best way to judge you is through your qualifications and your academic pursuits.

2. Format is extremely important in case of international resumes.

Your resume should have good margins, at least 1" on top, bottom, left and right each.

Your font should be standard - Times New Roman or Arial are the best. No comic sans please!

12-14 points is what your font size should be.

and last, your text needs to be left aligned.

3. You should name your file as "lastname_firstname_resume.doc" or "firstname_lastname_resume.doc"

4. Keep your contact information at the top and always include your country code in the telephone number.

5. Try not to use Bold and Italics font styles too much. Keep their use to a bare minimum for only those places where it is absolutely necessary to make a differentiation, like headings.

6. Use Universal position titles only. Don't write your designation as Group Leader if you only performed the role of a supervisor. Your company might call you a group leader but your new employer might not understand what you did. So use "Supervisor" in your resume. But, make sure your references are aware of this so they know what to say when they are called by the employer.

7. Do not abbreviate terms. Use "Vice President" for VP and "Deputy Manager" for "Dpty Mgr"

After you have followed the above steps, make sure your resume is broadly sectioned in these categories. You can have different sections, ofcourse but generally an employer will expect your resume to be written in this way.

The main sections should more probably be

Personal Information

Skills

Education and Qualifications

Career Experience

Extra-Curricular Activities and Interests
