Resume and Interview Tips

Tips on Resume Writing
By:Cheng Keat Tan

Design is all about selling. Just look around in your local supermarket, all the attractive packaging displayed on the shelves are competing to get shoppers' attention. Imagine them as beauty pageants posing in front of judges (in this case YOU) hoping that they will be selected by YOU. Hence you can see that design plays a very important role in presenting a product to people with the ultimate purpose of being able to be sold. Design is not just about striking presentation, it is about selling!

Take smart phones for example, what contributes to the success of iPhone compare to the rest? Is it because of the features within the phone? I doubt so because other Android powered phones have more apps for free. Most iPhone's apps need to be purchased. In terms of usability, any android phone is more functional than iPhone. But then why is iPhone still so popular? It is because of its design and branding. The phone itself is sleek and clean. And all the marketing strategies that have been produced by the late Steve Jobs have branded the phone to be a must-have item for everyone. You instantly feel that your social status is confirmed the moment you grab hold of an iPhone. You feel yourself being relevant when you have one. I know it sounds crazy but this is what is happening especially among the youths these days. Such is the power of design and branding which can uplift a product beyond its underlying value.

Now let's pause for a moment and try to apply this idea of selling to the most important product in your life that is YOU! No, I don't mean selling your body as a prostitute although this is one type of selling in itself. In a much broader sense, selling yourself means offering your skill and expertise in contribution to the society. You might be thinking right now..."But wait a minute! I'm not interested in doing charity work." Without you realizing it, we constantly sell ourselves everyday in one form of another. When you go to work this morning, you are selling your time and services to the company you work for in exchange for a paycheck at the end of the month. When you talk to someone on certain issues, you are selling your ideas in hoping that he/she will buy your arguments.

Therefore it is by no accident that we you try to look for a job, you are actually trying very hard to sell yourself to the potential employer hoping that he/she will pay you for what you can offer. If hunting for job equals to selling yourself, then your resume obviously will have to be your sales letter. Yes, resume is not just a compilation of your work experience and educational background; but a sales copy to promote you to the potential employer.

For every one job that is advertised on the internet, there are at least 100 applications. Imagine that if you were the HR manager for that company, how would you sort out and select one right candidate from a pile of 100+ resume? Don't you think it is tough? Most resume would look more or less the same and would be filtered away and probably ended in the trash. So your resume must be written in a way to sell yourself, highlighting your notable achievements, what can you do and your superior quality compared to the other 99 faceless applicants.

So let's redesign your resume today into a stunning sales tool to help promote yourself better!
