Resume and Interview Tips

Curriculum Vitae / Resume Tips
By:Robert J Pratt

FACT - A well written resume / CV will help you to win an interview.

In order to write an excellent resume / CV, it is essential that its purpose is understood. A CV is simply a hook to get you a meeting with the recruiter. A CV is also the basis for an interview discussion, in the interview you can expand on any points made and used in the CV.

To make sure your CV is as effective as possible, following these tips:

Relevant
The most important thing to any potential employer is that your CV matches their business needs or requirements - Tailoring your CV is an excellent way to achieve this. There is a limit to what information can be extracted from a CV, so ensure you include your most relevant skills and experiences.

Concise
With so many candidates in the market, recruiters simply do not have time to read every CV word for word, so it is vital that you are able to highlight the most important aspects of your skills and experience as quickly as possible. Bullet points are an ideal way to achieve this.

Keep it simple
The easier your CV and experiences are to understand the better. Employers do not have time to try to work out what you have been doing or achieved. Remember, just because you understand what you have done in the past, do not assume that everyone else will understand.

Identify key achievements
Shout about what you have achieved, especially what you have achieve for your previous employers. This is crucial; it lets potential employers know what value you have provided to previous employers and what value they could expect to gain from appointing you.

Include facts and example projects
This backs up your key achievements, for example did you increase sales turnover? If so, by how much? By including the specifics, you are adding weight to your CV helping to separate you from the other job applicants.

Keep it personal
Avoid using clichés, despite what you might think, things such as "I can work well individually or as part of a team" can be seen on CV after CV, and it is also something that many employers have come to expect. Instead of these clichés, demonstrate these skills using genuine examples such as "I independently carried out an assignment..." or "within the team I was responsible for". Do not focus too much on generic personal skills; as an interview is a better opportunity to display these skills.

Honesty
Never lie on a CV. This will not benefit anyone, including you. By doing so, you be putting at risk your reputation. Any inconsistencies in your CV will most likely be ruthlessly exposed in the interview process and especially during the early days of any employment.

Ensure to include keywords
This is important for a two reasons. Firstly, it can provide familiarity to the reader. Secondly, and arguably most importantly, recruiters search CV databases for keywords which they think summarises a job, therefore if the relevant keywords are not in your CV, then your details will not be displayed in their search.

For example, a Development Surveyor might include keywords such as: development, site identification, acquisitions, retail properties, and commercial properties.

Ensure there are no mistakes
Many employers are currently receiving applications from a number of jobseekers all of whom are capable of doing the job. Therefore how do managers decide who to interview? One way they look to reduce their shortlist of candidates is to remove the applications with errors in them - this included spelling and grammar mistakes.

Make best use of space
It is a general rule that a CV should typically be 2 pages in length, and in an easy to read and generic font.
