How to Get an Internship Opportunity Using An Appealing Cover Letter
By:Ana Thames <annathames@yahoo.com>

Summer jobs and internships are a big time hit in the western countries; it is catching up in the eastern countries as well now. It offers students and freshmen a golden opportunity to get hands on experience. With the competition in the job market soaring high, it is an absolute must to have relevant job experience to land in a good job. After all, you should do what it takes to get to the benchmark you set for yourself. With respect to career goals, it begins right after school. Life has become fast paced and everyone is in the rat race. Internships come to your rescue when you are just entering the corporate and professional world. To ensure you get a good opportunity, you should know and learn the tact of marketing yourself. An appealing cover letter lets you do just that.

Internship cover letters are definitely different than the job cover letters, because the employer in this case has nothing much to gain as compared to the candidate applying for internship. The content of the cover letter should be appealing and you can do it by converting the letter into a personal communication with the recipient.

Follow the following few steps when writing the letter:

  • Find out the person you have to contact and the in charge who is responsible for taking in interns.
  • Know what the organization is involved in and check if this is what you wish to learn or related to the field you want to be in.
  • Give reference in the letter when writing the introduction paragraph. Tell the employer how you came to know that they offer internships.
  • Tell the employer how the internship would benefit you and what it means to you to be a part of the company.
  • Express genuineness by letting them know how you wish to contribute to them. If you may, you can tell them that you might want to join them as a regular employee too, once you are done with your current education course.
  • Highlight your credentials by giving details about the projects you have done in school or college.
  • If possible, ask for a letter of recommendation too from your head of department or principal.
  • Make yourself available on the contact details you provide and be alert whenever you get a call or email from them.
  • These are a few basic things to include in this letter in order to make your internship cover letter appealing to the employer. Research about the organization well, present it accordingly in the letter and you are sure to get the opportunity you are looking for.
