I learned this one from my Mom, Jean Marie Day and I guess she got it from her mother, my Grandmother Anderson. It applies to older food that might not be safe to eat and has preserved my health quite a few times. I told this saying to a Korean guy and he said while smiling, "We say, when in doubt boil it." That was funny.

Some facts: Food bacteria create toxins while growing and boiling the food will kill bacteria but does not remove the toxins they created earlier. The toxins can make you very sick or give mild diarrhea. Don't follow this boiling advice as it only works in the very early stages of food spoiling.

You can teach this slogan or quote or saying to kids. Ask them if it also applies to people they meet. Do they throw out bad friends? Do they try to keep so-so friends but limit the time spent with them? Do they throw out their old clothes and toys or recycle or reuse them in some ways or pass them on to others? An old shoe or boot or handbag can make a funky flower pot. Sew up an old pair of jeans and make a cool shoulder bag. It's a good topic in class.
