RAM V CHANDRAN The role of ego in worldly life differs from its role in spiritual life. Ego means self-esteem, pride, vanity etc. To lead a successful worldly life, self-esteem is a positive virtue, but vanity is a negative quality for spiritual practice, ego is the barrier and should be crushed.

RAMANA MAHARSHI As an example of direct perception everyone will quote the simile of the nellikai (gooseberry) placed in the palm of the hand. The Self is even more directly perceivable than the fruit on the palm. To perceive the fruit there must be the fruit, the palm to place it on and the eyes to see it. The mind should also be in the proper condition (to process the information). Without any of these four things, even those with very little knowledge can say out of direct experience, "I am". Because the Self exists just as the feeling "I am", atma vidya is very easy indeed. The easiest path is to see the one who is going to attain the atma (Self).

RAMANA MAHARSHI Concentration upon one thought makes all other thoughts disappears. Finally, that thought also disappears.

RAMAYANA 0 friends, behold my chariot through which I am always decidedly victorious... courage and tenacity are its wheels, immutable truth and character are its flags. Strength, discrimination, self-control and charity are its horses. Forgiveness, mercy and equanimity are the reins and devotion to the Lord is its charioteer. 0 friend, whoever possesses such a chariot can never be defeated. With this chariot he can not only subdue minor temptations, but transcend the trappings of this material world.

S RADHAKRISHNAN After urging worldly considerations, Krishna declares that the task has to be undertaken in a spirit of equal-mindedness. Without yielding to the restless desire for change, without being at the mercy of emotional ups and downs, let us do the work assigned to us in the situation in which we are placed.

S RADHAKRISHNAN Dama or self-restraint, dana or self-sacrifice, and day a or compassion help us free ourselves from the sway of craving, greed and anger. When the Buddha asks us to put out in our hearts the monstrous fires of infatuation, greed and resentment, he is emphasising the three virtues enjoined by the Upanishads.

S RADHAKRISHNAN Dharma literally means mode of being. It is the essential nature of a being that determines its mode of behaviour So long as our conduct is in conformity with our essential nature, we are acting in the right way Adharma is nonconformity to our nature. If the harmony of the world is derived from the conformity of all beings to their respective natures, the disharmony of the world is due to their nonconformity God does not stand aside, when we abuse our freedom and cause disequilibrium. He does not simply wind up the world, set if on the right track and then let it jog along by itself. His loving hand is steering it all the time.

S RADHAKRISHNAN Liberation pre-supposes bondage and in most people even this awareness is not there. Self-awareness is possible only in human beings, and knowledge and education are the sources of making one Self-conscious. The sociological definition of educationas 'that which rescues the individual from the mass of collectivity and gives him an identity' contributes to the development of ego and conflict. Formal education creates roles for the individual without developing his personality

S RADHAKRISHNAN The truly great men are not the men of wealth, not men who gain name and fame, but those who testify to the truth in them and refuse to compromise whatever the cost... We may punish their bodies, refuse them comforts, but we cannot buy their souls, we cannot break their spirits. Whoever possesses this invulnerability of spirit even to a little extent deserves our admiration.

S RADHAKRISHNAN The worst sinner has a future, even as the greatest saint has had a past. No one is so good or so bad as he imagines.

SADHGURU The word 'Shiva' means 'that which is not'. Why we use Shiva and not some other form of God is because the other forms seem to be good people, and you can easily get attached to them. It is difficult to get attached to Shiva. In Tamil Nadu, it is said you shouldn't keep Shiva's form in your house. He is the Maheshwara, but he has no space in your home; why? Maheshwara means he is beyond all gods. If he's there, his very form is such that all your attachments will get destroyed. You have made big investments in your attachments, and even though they have brought you very painful dividends, you still can't throw them away.

THIRUKKURAL There is no greater help than the company of the good; there is no greater source of sorrow than the company of the wicked.

THIRUUALLUVAR Behold the men who can cure the evils that have already befallen thee and who can guard thee from future ones; cultivate thou their friendship with ardour. It will be the rarest of rare good fortunes if thou canst secure to thyself the devotion of men of worth.

THIRUVAKURAL Forget anger towards all who have offended you, For from anger springs a multitude of wrongs.

THIRUVALAVAR Friendship is not for merriment but for stern reproach when friends go astray.

THIRUVALLUUAR Investigate well, show favour to none, maintain impartiality, consult the law, then give judgment that is the way of justice.

THIRUVALLUVAR The fiery scourge call hunger never touches the man who shares daily meal with other.

THIRUVALLUVAR The fortune that is built up by fraud may appear to thrive: but it is doomed for ever. The thirst for plunder leadeth in its season to endless grief. The man who thirsteth after plunder cannot weigh things aright nor can he walk in the way of righteousness.

THIRUVALLUVAR Though you guard it well, what destiny does not decree disappears. Though you cast it aside, what fate calls yours will not depart.

THIRUVALLUVAR Unless the heavens grant their gifts, neither the giver's generosity Nor the ascetic's aloofness will grace this wide world.

THIRUVALLUVAR Wealth acquired with proper means will yield virtues and happiness.

THIRUVALLUVAR What wondrous greatness this world possesses That yesterday a man was, and today he is not.

THIRUVALLUVAR When a rare opportunity comes, do not hesitate,/ But swiftly accomplish tasks that are otherwise impossible./ Even the weak may powerfully prevail if they choose the right/ Field of action, establish good defences; and then fight well./ The wise never under take an enterprise/ Which rashly risk.
