Lyric Quotes
By:Anton Lowenthal

Everyone knows how the right quote, in the right moment, can be a balm for the soul, lifting us up out of one level of consciousness to another state where we feel the meaningfulness of existence. Music, too, can have the same effect, though sounds can speak to a deeper part of us, changing our outlook on life without necessarily letting us know how or why. When the two get put together, we have some powerful material indeed. A song with good lyrics and the music to match can capture us at all levels.

You'll be hard-pressed to find anything worth listening to or remembering if you turn on the radio to a mainstream station these days. It would be more comforting to say that the empty music with empty lyrics that are at the top of the billboard charts are there because of some conspiracy, but it appears that people genuinely like so-called "music" by the likes of Britney Spears. Music lyric quotes like "Oops, I did it again" and "I'm toxic" are vapid at best, and probably more harmful than people realize.

Personally, I think that music is too powerful to be wasted on trivialities, though there is a place for throwaway songs and songs about silly things. But in this day and age where we are confronted by destruction on so many levels and injustices in most of the world, including anywhere we might call home, I say we need to make better use of lyric quotes to get people inspired and doing things to make the world a better place.

We can find such music and lyric quotes in a number of places once we search beyond the FM station playing "the hottest hits of today". But why not start with the songs that we might already be familiar with, as a reminder of the power of music to uplift and spur us to make positive changes in our lives?

Let's start with an idea that was put forth by Gandhi, and taken to even more people thanks to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It's the idea that we can't count on other people to do all the work, we have to do what we can as individuals. In the song "Man in the Mirror", Jackson sings:

"I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself
And make a change"

Along the same lines, we have Bob Marley who told us:

"Emancipate yourself from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds"

To that I say, hell yeah! We need songs that remind us of the personal responsibility each and every one of us has to create the life that we want, to make the world a better place for all.
