The Word For How in Tagalog
By:T F Andrews

When learning a new language, it is normal to ask a lot of questions and to want to find out the right to say and pronounce words. Having a small dictionary which translates from English to Tagalog and audio can go a long way when learning the language.

Some people are adventurous by nature and love outdoor sports and may decide to visit the city of Cagayan de Oro, which is located in the north to try their hand at white-water rafting. Cagayan de Oro also happens to be on an island; one of the many islands found in the Philippines. The question that many people ask is "how" can I get there.

The word for "how" in Tagalog is "paano." To ask how to find a hotel, one can say, ""Paano ko mahahanap ang hotel?" However, if someone wanted to ask about the distance, size or length of something, then one would have to use the word "gaano" instead of "paano."

Those visiting one of the islands of the Philippines often decide to look around for a hotel close to the airport (paliparan). At times locals visiting one of the islands might decide to spend the night in a hotel. The questions people often ask about their accommodations include: is the room expensive (Mahal ba ang kuwarto), the size of the rooms, the amenities available. The amenities may include places to shop, things to do and the distance from nearby attractions. To ask directions and ask where a particular street is located, the following phrase followed by the name of the street can be used "Gaano kalayo ang........?" and it means "How far is......"

If there are places to shop nearby some people may choose to purchase "mansanas: (apples) and "ubas" (grapes) from local vendors. Asking the price of the apples in Filipino would be "Magkano ang mansanas?" Others might choose to buy clothes such as socks (medyas) or a shirt (kamiseta). To ask the price of something in general we can say "Magkano ito?" which means "How much is this." Prices are usually in pesos and depending on the price one might get back a few cents (centavos) as change. Furthermore, interacting with locals is a good way to learn Tagalog.

Upon arrival in Cagayon de Oro, one thing that many people notice is that the island is beautiful. There is much to do and see. For instance, there are beautiful waterfalls, water rafting, and lush vegetation.

The local cuisine is also quite good. Depending on ones tastes one might find dishes such as pineapple chicken (pininyahang manok) to be tasty and chicken cooked in coconut milk (ginataang manok) to be appetizing. After eating, we can ask "Magkano ang kuwenta?" and it means "how much is the biill."

When learning a new language, it is normal to ask a lot of questions and to want to find out the right words to use to ask questions. The word "how" is often used when asking a question. In Tagalog the word for how is "gaano" or "paano" and the word "magkano" is used when asking "how much."
