Sightseeing in Cebu
By:Jessica Ackerman <Show E-Mail>

Cebu can be a great place to visit, either as a vacation or even if you just have a bit of free time. This beautiful island, located in the Philippines, is a popular place to visit. Not only is it extremely beautiful, but it also has many landmarks, historical features and cultural attractions. If you have the chance to spend some time in Cebu, here are some sights that you simply won't want to miss.

Religious Shrines and Churches
You'll find a number of interesting shrines and churches in Cebu. The Taoist Temple is a popular spot for tourists, but many people also make religious pilgrimages to visit this temple. Dedicated to the teachings of Confucius, this temple was built in 1972. It is located 300 meters above sea level, and is a towering structure that is truly beautiful. Because it is a religious shrine, you should be respectful to worshipers when you visit. Although there really isn't anything specific to do in the shrine, it is still a beautiful place to enjoy. The Celestial Garden is also another location that is worth a visit. This memorial park and cemetery is beautifully maintained and features a panoramic view of Cebu. There are also beautiful statues which depict the life of Jesus. The landscape, trees and plants are quite lovely, adding to the serenity of the area. It's a popular place for meditation and prayer, in addition to just enjoying the beautiful view and landscape.

Cultural Sites
The Casa Gorordo Museum features paintings, antique artwork, traditional furniture and many relics from the surrounding area. A visit to this museum can provide you with a glimpse back to what the Filipino lifestyle was like in the 1800s. The building itself was the residence of Cebu's first Filipino Bishop, Juan Gorordo. The Southwestern University Museum, Rizal Museum and Sala Piano Museum are great cultural sites to visit as well. If you love nature, the Julian Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary can be a great way to spend an afternoon. The Olango Wildlife Sanctuary is also a great place to go if you enjoy bird watching, since it is home to thousands of different species of birds from around the country.

The Natural Wonders of Cebu
Cebu has some of the most beautiful scenery that you'll ever find. Mactan Island offers beautiful beaches, resorts and scuba diving. The island also has many beautiful waterfalls, the most popular of which are located at Kawasan Falls. The Nonco Cave is the perfect spot if you enjoy hiking or diving. Nonco Cave also has an interesting history, as it was a popular hiding spot for Japanese soldiers during World War II. Today, it is a great place to have a picnic or to take some beautiful photos.

Historic Landmarks
Cebu is also home to several landmarks which are significant in the history of the Philippines. Fort San Pedro, which is the archipelago's oldest bastion, provides a look back into the history of the area. The Cebu Monument, Lapu Lapu Monument, the Capitol building and the University of San Carlos are other historic landmarks that you can visit.
