Learn to speak Tagalog
By:TF Andrews

People from the Philippines are called Filipinos and the Philippines is comprised of several thousand islands. In all there are over 7000 islands in the Philippines which is located in South East Asia.

There are many dialects spoken in the Philippines however, Filipino (Tagalog) is the national language.

Generally, if you wish to learn how to speak Tagalog, you should try to speak regularly with someone who knows the language. There are many Filipinos living in different countries throughout the world so it should not be difficult to find someone who would be willing to share their knowledge of the language. A good tutor can help tremendously. If you have no luck finding a tutor, another option is to buy audio; it can help. You can also browse the internet for websites that give tips on how you speak the language.

When learning Tagalog, keep in mind that enthusiasm alone may not be sufficient. Putting in the time and effort are also important. Learning the correct pronunciation and having an interest in the culture can also help.

In centuries past, the Philippines was colonized by Spain therefore one will find that some Spanish words have been incorporated into the language. For example, the Filipino word "kamusta," which means "how are you," was derived from the Spanish term "como esta" which means the same thing.

English words also found their way into the Filipino language because the Philippines, at one time, was an American colony. The term Taglish is often used to describe the usage of English words and Tagalog words when speaking.

When learning to speak Tagalog one should try to become familiar with the sounds and flow of the language. This can be achieved in numerous ways including watching Filipino channels and listening to radio stations. Renting foreign language movies, especially the ones with subtitles, is also a good way to learn some new words. Other ideas of how to learn Filipino include reading magazines and newspapers from the Philippines but remember to have a Tagalog / English dictionary handy. In addition, when learning Filipino try to say the words out loud, and practice them with native speakers. Native speakers often speak at a normal pace, can correct your pronunciation and give insight into the nuances of the language. You may find that your pronunciation improves with constant exposure to the language.

Last but not least, Filipino language classes are also a good alternative for learning the language. A good teacher can make what seemed difficult seem easy. Although, many dialects are spoken in the Philippines, Filipino (Tagalog) is the national language and it is widely spoken. Being able to speak both Tagalog (Filipino) and English will increase the chances of being able to communicate effectively with more people in the Philippines.
