ESL English Lesson: How is your spelling?
David Robinson

Today we will talk about spelling. How is your spelling? Is it very good, okay, not bad, or is it downright terrible? Are you embarrassed by your poor spelling? Do you use a dictionary or online dictionary?

The chances are you’ll use a spellchecker on your computer to help you with any words you are not sure about. Whilst this is not such a bad thing what would you do without it?

In this English lesson we will look at the top 50 words that Britons can’t spell correctly without using spellcheck or autocorrect on their computers and mobile phones. These words are actually the result of a survey that was commissioned recently by television channel Nick Jr UK to mark its new literacy-based show Wallykazam!

Writing/Speaking: In pairs. On the board write as many words as you can to do with ‘Spelling’. One-two minutes. Using your words compile a short dialogue together. Discussion: A) Did the headline make you want to read the article? 2) How is your spelling? 3) Are you embarrassed by your spelling? Discussion: Should letters like ‘u’ replace ‘you’ on SMS messages or indeed in everyday language? Explain why? Grammar, Spelling, Homework, etc.
