New Year's Resolutions - How to Accomplish Them and Beat the Odds
By:Debra Thompson

Does it surprise you to know that 9 out of 10 people don't keep their New Year's resolutions? If you are in that 90% category, don't fret. Success all comes down to doing the basics, and here are ten simple steps that will ensure success.

Only make a New Year’s resolution that concerns something you see as meaningful, a resolution that’s important and will make a real difference in your life.

Be precise when defining your resolution. Fuzzy and ambiguous resolutions are a sure path to defeat. If you aren't sure where you are going, chances are you'll never get there, except by sheer luck.

Develop a plan for accomplishing your resolution. Your plan must be as specific and exhaustive as it can be if you are to accomplish your New Year’s resolution. Be realistic. You want to make significant progress, but remember you ought never set a goal too difficult to achieve, as this will leave you frustrated and unsatisfied. Know where you are and be realistic about your prospects for improvement.

Write down the resolution. Getting them on paper is the first step in making those resolutions a reality. Forget this step, and it’s highly unlikely that you’ll keep your resolution. This is so easy, yet it's a major cause of failure.

Do not procrastinate. Jump right into your new way of life as soon as you can. Start on January 1st, and if at all possible, work on your new goals as early as you can during the day. Most of us experience our peak energy in the morning hours.

Try your best to find a friend or group to work with in keeping your resolution. Your odds of achieving your goal will be much greater than trying to do it in isolation. You'll have some one to encourage you on those days when things aren't going well. Being responsible to someone else will keep you on track.

Realize that you’re going to face trials, and have strategies for addressing them. Don’t let bumps in the road be excuses for giving up on your New Year’s resolutions. Every time you move past a difficulty, it will be easier the next time.

Develop a positive, upbeat mental attitude to stay on target and remain motivated while moving forward. Reward yourself when you achieve important breakthroughs. Celebrate small milestones along the way. You've earned it!

Review your resolutions daily and check yourself to see where you are. If circumstances require you to alter your goals or progress more slowly, that's OK. Just keep moving forward.

Develop the practice of action, of getting off the couch, of finishing projects and chores immediately. This attitude alone can radically change your life.

Whether you want to get in shape, shed a few pounds, improve your diet, or organize your finances, resolve to take on something this year. Remember that it's the little things that add up to big changes over time.
