Cultivate Feelings of Quiet Accomplishment - Self Improvement
By:Dr. Gary S. Goodman

Like you, I have major responsibilities.

But if I think about them all the time, I’ll go nuts, feeling overwhelmed.

It’s far better, I’ve found, to simply do what is before me to do, whether it is working on some modest aspect of a large initiative or even doing what may seem to others to be trifling.

For example, in addition to taking care of my dog, and I’ll be the first to admit he and I should spend more quality time together, I feed a small family of feral cats.

This is the third generation I’ve taken care of, so like koi fish, I relax by studying their colors and movements as they feed at one of the three small bowls that I’ve put out for them.

Seeing them enjoy the “gourmet” fare really calms me down, putting many things into perspective. For one thing, I appreciate how improvised their lives are.

Sometimes, all four of them show up, Mom and her three offspring. But most often they visit either one at a time or in pairs, and their timing varies dramatically. Occasionally, they’ll be on their own for days at a time, undoubtedly wandering somewhere or popping in and out of other neighbors’ lives.

The small actions of feeding them, saying hello and goodbye, and observing their development give me a sense of accomplishment, and to a large extent, a feeling of continuity.

The world beyond is beset with large scale passions and poisons, but on this porch there is less drama, and except for an occasional snarl or fright, nature is steadily and without worry, taking its course.

Goals don’t have to be huge to be significant, and while we’re waiting for those big ships to come in, or we’re even contemplating swimming out to meet them, it’s useful to cultivate feelings of quiet accomplishment.

Opportunities to do this are all around us. Take advantage of them and it may give your strivings a sort of tranquility you'll appreciate.
