Skepticism - Avoid Over Reaction
By:Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Healthy skepticism keeps us from going in a direction that is in the end unhealthy or dangerous. Even though caution is healthy, it is important to trust your intuition to create a healthy work and living experience. Trusting yourself helps you gain your trust in others. By tapping into the guidance of your intuition, you know when you need to open up to others and when you need to be more wary.

Appropriate suspicion/skepticism is healthy. If you pay attention to your body sensations you will be able to sense who and what you can trust; and who and what you need to back away from. When your intuitiveness or sixth sense has sent out a caution signal you will notice a change in your physiology: Common physiological changes include, but are not limited to:

• Heart rate increase
• A sensation one's blood is draining out or feeling chilled/cold
• Sweaty palms
• Goose bumps
• Nervousness/anxiousness for no obvious reason
• Stomach butterflies
• Feeling sick to the stomach
• Stomach seems to drop
• A general sense of uneasiness

In addition your intuition is sending a caution signal when you experience:

• Confusion regarding a person's actions
• Nagging/persistent negative thoughts or feelings
• Hesitation-should I or shouldn't I-initially erring on the side of caution, until you can gather more data is the best policy
• General suspicion-albeit you have no evidence-initially erring on the side of caution, until you can gather more data is the best policy
• Apprehension
• Fear
• Doubt
• A hunch-somethings not right
• Curiosity regarding a person's actions or statements
• Questions regarding a person's proclamation that is not substantiated by their actions

The more you trust your intuition, the more you will be able to trust others when appropriate. Your skepticism of others is more often then not the result of your feeling that something is not right. This feeling is healthy when it is based on the body sensations described above. It is important to be cautious, however, being too mistrustful of others leads to problems in relationships and a general wariness about people. By being able to trust yourself and your inner voice, you will be able to more easily establish trust in what others are about.
