A man hops out of bed. Today is the big day. There’s a job interview for a telegraph operator position in Massachusetts. Just imagine being the person working on the cutting edge of technology. To be the center of communication for people miles and miles away, connecting them for commerce and trade. What a dream position.

The man brushes his teeth. Usually he doesn’t like wearing a suit and a tie, but for this day, a special occasion, he doesn’t mind. The thought of the competition for this job, the people who are more qualified than he who are also competing for the job did not even occur to him. His mind was simply set. He’s going to be a telegraph operator.

He rushes out of his apartment, catches the bus and rushes to the office downtown. As he is filling the paper work, the other applicants there early were sitting down observing this man busily filling out his paperwork. The office is busy but quiet, only the sound of a telegraph ticking.

Finished filling out the paperwork, the man rushes into the office, without being invited in.

The applicants sitting there, waiting to be called, look at each other in astonishment. One fellow speaks, “How rude, that’s good news for us.” Another man in a dashing suit replies, “That’s less competition for us.”

Then a few minutes later, the director comes out of his office laughing and talking cheerfully to the man who rushed into the office.

Director says, “The position has been filled, everyone go home.” The applicants are stunned. “The telegraph has been going on for the last thirty minutes, it said

“If you hear this, come into the office right away. You got the position.”

So which person are you. Are you the man who was aware and focused so much on his goal that all he heard was opportunity, or are you the applicant sitting outside the office waiting for opportunity to call to you. There are opportunities all around us. Everything we need to succeed is available here, now, at this moment. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Take action. All you have is now. Yesterday’s gone, tomorrow is not guaranteed.
